The long-awaited expansion of Raxaul Airport, situated near the crucial India-Nepal border in East Champaran district, has finally gained substantial momentum. The Bihar state government has taken a decisive step by releasing ₹207.70 crore specifically for acquiring an additional 139 acres of land, marking a significant breakthrough for this strategic infrastructure project.
Expedited Compensation and Project Implementation
District administration officials have accelerated the process of compensating landowners, which is crucial for speeding up work on this important brownfield development. The project aims to significantly enhance border connectivity while simultaneously strengthening the region's economic and strategic importance. Nilesh Ramchandra Deore, special secretary of the civil aviation department, recently shared a detailed project map, confirming that the comprehensive layout is now fully prepared and ready for implementation.
"Runway expansion work will commence immediately after the completion of compensation payments to affected farmers," stated an official from the civil aviation department. "The redevelopment of Raxaul Airport will substantially strengthen connectivity between India and Nepal while boosting economic, business, and social ties across the border region."
Political Push and Historical Context
During his Samridhi Yatra in January, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar personally directed district officials to expedite land acquisition processes for Raxaul Airport's development. This political push underscores the project's importance in improving air connectivity across Bihar's border areas. Originally constructed in 1962 during the India-China war on 153 acres of land, the airport is now undergoing comprehensive redevelopment as a brownfield project.
The most significant upgrade involves extending the runway to 2,360 meters—nearly 1,000 meters longer than the existing strip. This substantial extension will transform the airport's operational capabilities and open new possibilities for both civilian and military aviation.
Strategic and Commercial Significance
