RMC Intensifies Cleanliness Drive for Swachh Survekshan 2025-26

With the central team for Swachh Survekshan 2025-26 expected to visit Ranchi around mid-May for ground inspection, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has intensified its cleanliness drive to improve the city's ranking after its poor performance in 2025. Ranchi ranked 37th out of 40 cities in the category of urban centres with over 10 lakh population in the 2024-25 survey and failed to secure any star rating under the Garbage Free City category. Poor scores were recorded in door-to-door waste collection, source segregation and maintenance of public toilets.

Sustained Cleanliness Approach

Municipal commissioner Sushant Gaurav said the focus this year is on sustained cleanliness rather than short-term drives. “We are ensuring 100% door-to-door waste collection, strict waste segregation at source and timely lifting of garbage in all wards. Visible cleanliness across roads, drains and public spaces is being closely monitored,” he said.

Operational Measures

As part of preparations, RMC has deployed three-shift garbage lifting in all wards, intensified night cleaning in commercial areas and formed dedicated road management teams to prevent roadside dumping. Spot fines are also being imposed on littering and on establishments defaulting on solid waste user charges.

Learning from Jamshedpur

RMC has also organised a two-day learning visit to Jamshedpur to study its solid waste management and segregation practices after the city secured the third rank nationally.

Sandeep Kumar, city manager and RMC's nodal officer for the survey, said the central inspection team is likely to arrive around May 15. “The field inspection can happen around that time, and we are preparing ward-wise to ensure compliance on every parameter,” he said.

Officials said citizen feedback, sanitation workers' welfare and public toilet upkeep will also carry major weightage this year.
