Ranchi Municipal Corporation Launches Comprehensive Safety Drive at Khadgarha Bus Terminal

The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has launched a series of corrective and preventive measures at the Bhagwan Birsa Munda Bus Terminal, commonly known as Khadgarha Bus Stand, located in Ward No. 12. This decisive action comes in direct response to a recent fire incident that occurred on the premises, highlighting significant safety concerns at one of Ranchi's busiest transportation hubs.

High-Level Inspection and Immediate Action Plan

Taking serious note of the fire incident, RMC officials conducted a thorough inspection of the terminal to assess safety, security, and operational arrangements. The inspection was led by Additional Administrator Sanjay Kumar on Tuesday, following a news report by TOI titled "Safety under lens after 6 buses caught fire at Khadgarha stand" which brought to light the apprehensions of bus operators and passengers regarding the lack of basic safety and civic amenities.

During the review, discussions centered on preventing the recurrence of such hazardous incidents and enhancing the overall management and security protocols of the terminal. Officials have issued clear directives to implement stricter monitoring systems.

Key Safety and Operational Directives Issued

The municipal corporation has mandated several critical measures:

  • Enhanced surveillance and stricter control at all entry and exit points of the terminal.
  • Regular patrolling by police personnel, enforcement teams, and home guards to maintain security.
  • Strict action against any form of substance abuse within the terminal premises.
  • Instructions to all bus operators to keep parked buses securely locked and ensure no unauthorized individuals remain inside vehicles.

Addressing Infrastructure and Unauthorized Activities

A major focus was placed on clearing the terminal of obstacles and hazards. Additional Administrator Sanjay Kumar issued a stern warning regarding abandoned vehicles, stating, "All condemned buses parked inside the terminal must be removed within 3 days. Failing this, the municipal corporation will initiate scrapping and impose penalties as per rules."

Furthermore, the civic body has ordered:

  1. Immediate repair of all non-functional lighting fixtures across the premises.
  2. Installation of additional lighting and CCTV cameras to improve visibility and security monitoring.
  3. Removal of all illegal vendors, stalls, and unauthorized shops operating inside the terminal.
  4. A zero-tolerance policy towards any form of illegal collection or unauthorized commercial activity.

Strengthening Fire Safety Preparedness

Fire safety emerged as a paramount concern during the discussions. Officials confirmed that proactive steps are being taken to ensure the availability and proper maintenance of firefighting equipment. There will also be improved coordination with the fire services department to bolster emergency response capabilities.

Emphasizing the corporation's commitment, Kumar added, "The municipal corporation is dedicated to developing the Birsa Munda Bus Terminal into a safe, well-organized, and passenger-friendly transport hub for the city of Ranchi." This comprehensive initiative marks a significant push by the RMC to restore public confidence and ensure the safety of thousands of daily commuters.
