Major Railway Upgrade: Berhampur Station to Get Rs 300 Crore Facelift

The Indian Railways has given the green light for a massive redevelopment project at Berhampur railway station in Odisha, approving a substantial budget of Rs 300 crore. This significant investment aims to transform the station into a modern transportation hub capable of efficiently managing the growing passenger traffic and train operations in the region.

Expanding Capacity with New Lines and Platforms

According to an official statement released by the East Coast Railway (ECoR) on Wednesday, the comprehensive redevelopment plan includes the addition of three new railway lines and four additional platforms. This expansion is crucial as Berhampur station currently handles more than 162 trains daily, serving approximately 25,000 passengers. The enhanced infrastructure will enable the station to better accommodate the increasing number of trains and improve operational efficiency.

The project encompasses major yard modifications and the construction of a new station building on the second-entry side. To create space for a more passenger-friendly layout, railway officials have confirmed that existing service buildings and railway quarters will be relocated. This strategic move will allow for better circulation areas and improved passenger flow throughout the station premises.

Modern Amenities for Enhanced Passenger Experience

The redevelopment blueprint includes numerous modern facilities designed to elevate the travel experience for all passengers:

  • Accessibility Features: Multiple lifts and escalators will be installed throughout the station to ensure easy movement for all passengers, including elderly travelers and those with mobility challenges.
  • Divyang-Friendly Infrastructure: The station will incorporate tactile pathways, level-access facilities, and other barrier-free design elements to create an inclusive environment for differently-abled passengers.
  • Quick Watering System: A specialized quick watering system will be implemented to accelerate the watering process for coaching rakes, significantly reducing turnaround time and enabling faster train departures.
  • Enhanced Security: Comprehensive CCTV surveillance systems, access control mechanisms, and baggage scanners will be deployed to ensure passenger safety and security.
  • Passenger Information Systems: Modern digital displays and information systems will keep travelers updated about train schedules and platform information.

Infrastructure Improvements and Circulation Areas

To address congestion issues, circulating areas on both sides of the station are being systematically developed. ECoR officials have reported that work on the main circulating area has already been completed, including road widening, footpath construction, drainage systems, compound walls, and landscaping. Development of the second-entry circulating area is currently in progress and will provide Berhampur, often called the silk city, with another functional access point to the station.

Additional platform shelters are under construction to protect passengers from weather elements, while integrated electrical and signaling improvements will enhance operational reliability. Multilingual signage in Odia, Hindi, and English will be installed throughout the station to facilitate easier navigation for passengers from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

Cultural Reflection and Future Developments

Railway sources have indicated that the tender for the redevelopment work will be floated soon. The new station building is designed to reflect the rich tradition and cultural heritage of Berhampur, creating a sense of local identity within the modern transportation facility.

In a related development, the railways has sanctioned a final location survey for establishing a coach maintenance facility at Golanthara, located near Berhampur station. Once operational, this facility is expected to enable more trains to originate from and terminate at Berhampur, further boosting the station's importance in the regional railway network.
