SCR Launches Major Safety Drive: Fencing 1,835 km of High-Speed Tracks in Telangana

South Central Railway (SCR) has launched a new safety initiative in Hyderabad. The railway zone plans to install fencing along railway tracks and boundary walls wherever possible. This move aims to prevent trespassing by pedestrians, cattle, and vehicles.

Addressing a Critical Safety Issue

Data reveals a grim reality for Telangana. In 2025, over 1,000 people lost their lives on trains and railway tracks. These tragic incidents primarily resulted from dangerous behaviors. People were trespassing, crossing tracks recklessly, and using mobile phones while walking near the lines.

The new project directly targets these causes. It focuses on enhancing safety across the network.

First Phase Targets High-Speed Corridors

The first phase of this extensive project will cover key sections. Fencing will be installed on the Secunderabad-Kazipet, Kazipet–Balharshah, Kazipet–Kondapalli, and Secunderabad-Dhone routes. Trains on these sections operate at the maximum permissible speed of 130 kmph.

These identified stretches span nearly 1,835 kilometers across the railway network. The estimated cost for this crucial safety upgrade is around ₹3,200 crore.

SCR officials stated they have identified all golden quadrilateral, golden diagonal, and high-density routes for fencing. These are lines permitted for 130 kmph operations. The selection also includes some critical stretches, chosen after considering traffic density and specific safety concerns.

Focus on Pedestrian Safety and Suburban Areas

Railway authorities emphasize that pedestrian safety is a core focus. A large number of accidents occur due to unauthorized track crossings. This problem is especially acute in suburban and semi-urban areas.

To provide a safer alternative, the railways propose constructing adequate pedestrian subways. These will be built at locations with regular movement of people, cattle, and small vehicles. The subways will ensure safe and uninterrupted crossing of railway lines. This should significantly reduce dependence on dangerous track-level crossings.

Securing MMTS Corridors and Dense Neighborhoods

Special attention is being given to sections connected to the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS). This network serves thousands of daily commuters in Hyderabad. These corridors often pass through densely populated neighborhoods where pedestrian movement across tracks is frequent.

A senior SCR official highlighted a challenge. "At several locations, fencing was damaged by local residents. Therefore, the majority of these sections would need to be provided with boundary walls," the official said. This indicates a shift to more robust structures in vulnerable areas.

Technical Specifications and Broader Benefits

Authorities have ensured the fencing design addresses technical safety. The fencing will not become a medium for electrical induction from overhead electrical (OHE) equipment. It will be installed close to the tracks and fully sealed to prevent trespassing. Importantly, sufficient space will be left for the movement of maintenance trolleys and railway equipment.

Officials believe this initiative will deliver multiple benefits. It will enhance safety for pedestrians and commuters. Simultaneously, it will help maintain the reliability and punctuality of high-speed and suburban train services. By preventing unauthorized intrusions, the railways can ensure smoother operations.

This comprehensive project represents a significant investment in public safety. It tackles a persistent problem head-on, aiming to make railway travel safer for everyone in the region.
