Shimla SDM Faces Official Warning Over Social Media Promotion of Private Fitness Products

Shimla Urban sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Oshin Sharma has been formally cautioned by authorities after videos emerged on social media platforms allegedly showing her promoting fitness products from a private company. The incident has sparked significant public attention and official scrutiny regarding the conduct of civil servants in the digital age.

Chief Secretary Directs Investigation and Warning

Chief Secretary Sanjay Gupta took cognizance of the matter on Friday and immediately directed Shimla Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap to issue a warning to SDM Sharma. The chief secretary specifically instructed an investigation to determine whether Sharma's social media posts violated Rule 15(1) of the Civil Services Conduct Rules, which governs the behavior and activities of government officials.

The investigation will particularly examine whether Sharma's alleged promotion of the fitness products constituted an endorsement for monetary gain or other benefits, which would represent a serious breach of conduct regulations for administrative officers.

Officer's Response and Social Media Activity

Following public criticism and official attention, Sharma, a 2020-batch Himachal Pradesh Administrative Service (HAS) officer, took several steps to address the situation. Initially, she removed the promotional posts from her social media accounts. Subsequently, she deactivated her social media handles entirely, which reportedly had a substantial number of followers.

This is not the first time Sharma has faced social media-related issues. In November of last year, she filed a formal police complaint at the New Shimla women's police station regarding a fake Facebook profile created in her name. That profile allegedly shared objectionable content, including artificial intelligence (AI)-generated images that misrepresented the officer.

Broader Implications for Civil Servants

The incident highlights the increasing challenges government officials face in navigating social media platforms while maintaining professional boundaries. Civil servants are expected to uphold strict standards of conduct both in their official duties and personal lives, particularly when their personal activities might be perceived as influencing their professional roles.

The warning issued to SDM Sharma serves as a reminder to all administrative officers about the importance of maintaining appropriate boundaries on social media and avoiding activities that could be construed as commercial endorsements or conflicts of interest.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the investigation progresses, with potential implications for how civil service conduct rules are interpreted and enforced in the context of modern digital communication platforms.
