Shiv Sena MLA Demands Probe into BKC Park Restriction

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Varun Sardesai has demanded a high-level probe into what he termed a 'shocking' restriction of public access to the BKC City Park, allegedly imposed by MMRDA officials. In a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Sardesai asserted that a public park built and maintained with taxpayers' money cannot be turned into a private recreational space for a select group of bureaucrats and their families.

MLA's Allegations

“Those responsible for using public funds for the maintenance and upkeep of a garden that is being used exclusively by families of a few officials must be suspended immediately pending an enquiry. Public land belongs to the public,” Sardesai stated in a post on X. The MMRDA did not respond to the allegations.

Details of the Complaint

In his letter to the Chief Minister, Sardesai elaborated that the nearly 5-acre 'City Park' situated in the heart of BKC, developed using public funds as a green recreational space for Mumbai's citizens, has allegedly been converted into an exclusive facility accessible only to MMRDA officers and their families residing in the Jetwan staff quarters. During his visit to the park, Sardesai observed that public access is effectively restricted. He noted that taxpayers' money is being used to maintain the garden and sports infrastructure. Premium recreational facilities, including tennis courts and cricket turfs, have been developed but remain inaccessible to ordinary citizens. Exclusive sports events for MMRDA officers have reportedly been conducted within the premises.

Demand for Action

Sardesai urged the Chief Minister to order a high-level inquiry into the matter and take appropriate action against those responsible. He emphasized that such practices undermine the spirit of public spaces and misuse government funds.
