New Delhi: The Public Works Department (PWD) has approved a proposal to hire a consultant for a comprehensive structural audit of the Signature Bridge, along with a maintenance methodology to ensure its health and structural stability.
PWD Minister Expresses Concern
PWD Minister Parvesh Verma stated, "It is unfortunate that the Signature Bridge went without a structural audit for more than seven years. Public safety cannot be ignored." Officials revealed that the cost of engaging the consultant would be Rs 17.5 lakh.
Slanting Lifts to Be Assessed
The government will also evaluate the status of the bridge's slanting lifts. The consultant will assess the feasibility of making these lifts operational for public use. Based on the report, necessary steps for repairs, rehabilitation, and maintenance will be taken, Verma added.
Transfer of Bridge to PWD
The project was originally executed by the Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC) and was to be handed over to PWD, as DTTDC lacked the budget for its maintenance. Following long-pending requests, the bridge was handed over to PWD earlier this year.
Timely Completion Directed
PWD has directed the engineer-in-charge to ensure that the consultancy work is completed on time.
