BMC Sets May 31, 2025 Deadline for Sion Flyover Reconstruction in Mumbai
Sion Flyover reconstruction deadline set for May 31, 2025

In a significant move to expedite a crucial infrastructure project, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a firm deadline for the completion of the Sion flyover reconstruction. Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar on Tuesday directed civic officials to ensure all work is wrapped up by May 31, 2025.

Project Gains Momentum, Key Deadlines Announced

Officials present at the review meeting indicated that the reconstruction work is now picking up the expected pace. To maintain this momentum, Commissioner Bangar outlined a clear, phased timeline for the upcoming critical activities. This structured approach aims to streamline coordination and prevent delays on the busy corridor.

Bangar announced that the construction of an underpass on LBS Marg is slated for completion within this month itself. Following this, a second underpass on the Dharavi side is targeted for completion by the end of February 2024. These underpasses are vital for managing ground-level traffic flow once the flyover is operational.

Major Girder Launch Schedule for 2024

The project will witness major milestones in the first quarter of the new year with the launch of girders, which are essential structural components for the flyover. According to the plan, the girder launch on the bridge's northern half will be carried out in the first week of March 2024.

Subsequently, the girder launch for the southern side of the flyover is scheduled for the first week of April 2024. Once these primary structural elements are in place, the focus will shift to completing the remaining ancillary work within the railway limits, which is often a complex segment due to necessary permissions and safety protocols.

Implications for Mumbai's Commuters

The Sion flyover is a critical artery in Mumbai's road network, connecting central suburbs to south Mumbai and the eastern expressway. Its reconstruction has been a point of concern for daily commuters facing traffic snarls. The BMC's directive and the newly announced deadlines bring a renewed sense of urgency and clarity to the project.

The phased completion of underpasses and the major girder work by April next year are expected to significantly alter the site's landscape and improve traffic management progressively. The final deadline of May 31, 2025, sets a clear target for authorities and offers a timeline for Mumbaikars awaiting relief from congestion in the area.

This push reflects the civic body's focus on upgrading the city's aging infrastructure within defined timelines, a key demand from citizens and businesses alike. The successful and timely completion of the Sion flyover will be a major test of project execution for the BMC.
