The Maharashtra government is gearing up to introduce smart electricity meters across Nagpur district as part of its broader power sector modernization initiative. However, many residents remain skeptical and unconvinced about the advantages of the new system.
Citizen Concerns Over Billing
Shahnawaz Sheikh voiced strong objections to the plan. He alleged that the smart meters continue to record electricity consumption even during power outages, leading to inflated bills. Sheikh claimed that consumers might end up with bills nearly double their previous amounts, opposing the drive on these grounds.
Association Urges Informed Decision
In contrast, Tejinder Singh Renu, secretary of the Vidarbha Taxpayers Association (VTA), urged citizens to understand the system before rejecting it. He explained that currently, consumers rely on a postpaid billing system, but smart meters would offer greater control over monitoring personal electricity usage. Since installation is free, Renu argued there is no reason to oppose the system without knowing its benefits. He added that the rollout should be practical and not rushed, ensuring authorities inform citizens and guarantee transparency and consumer interests.
