Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Launches Swachhata Drive in Manimajra Schools
As part of the ongoing Swachh Survekshan-2026 initiative, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) organized a comprehensive cleanliness and environmental awareness campaign today. The event took place at Government Model School, Pocket No. 6, and Government Model School, Pocket No. 10, located in Manimajra, aiming to instill sustainable practices among young students and educators.
Focus on Waste Segregation and Management
During the programme, MC officials sensitized teachers and students about the critical importance of segregating four distinct types of waste. They emphasized proper garbage management at the source to enhance cleanliness and reduce environmental impact. The officials highlighted the harmful effects of single-use plastic, urging students to completely avoid such materials in their daily lives.
Promoting Home Composting and the Triple R Concept
A key component of the drive was educating students on home composting techniques, which can significantly reduce organic waste. Special attention was given to the concept of triple R — reduce, reuse, and recycle — encouraging children to adopt eco-friendly habits. This initiative aims to foster a culture of sustainability from an early age, contributing to broader environmental goals.
Citizen Engagement and Enforcement Measures
Officials appealed to citizens to actively participate in making Chandigarh a top-ranked city in Swachh Rankings. They encouraged reporting instances of littering by taking photographs with location details and sharing them with the Municipal Corporation for necessary challan actions against violators. Additionally, the MC announced plans to launch a strict enforcement drive against banned plastic carry bags in Manimajra, with no leniency shown towards those flouting the law.
Participation and Support
The programme saw active participation from key figures, including Principal Neelam Sood of GMS Pocket No. 6, Principal Tarun of GMS Pocket No. 10, Shivani Gupta, teaching staff, and numerous students. This collaborative effort underscores the community's commitment to achieving a cleaner and greener Chandigarh through targeted educational campaigns and proactive measures.
