In a significant move to enhance public infrastructure, the Tambaram Corporation has allocated ₹8 crore for the construction of a landmark tower and park along the Radial Road. This project aims to provide residents of the rapidly expanding suburban city with a dedicated recreational space to unwind and socialize.

Project Details and Location

The tower will be erected on a 2-acre Open Space Reservation (OSR) land in Zone 2, situated along the Radial Road stretch. Construction is scheduled for completion by the end of this year. Unlike Chennai, which boasts iconic structures such as the Royapettah Clock Tower and Anna Nagar Tower Park, Tambaram currently lacks well-known public landmarks, making this initiative a notable step toward civic identity.

Inspiration and Vision from Officials

Tambaram Corporation Commissioner S Balachander revealed that the project draws inspiration from similar public spaces in cities like Chennai and Coimbatore. "We envisioned creating a place where people can relax, spend quality time with their families, and proudly claim it as their own landmark," he stated. The tower will be integrated into a park featuring recreational areas and a dedicated play space for children, fostering community engagement.

Resident Reactions and Concerns

While residents have generally welcomed the idea, some have expressed concerns regarding priorities. M Kumaravel, President of the Bharathi Nagar Residents Welfare Association, acknowledged the project as a positive step but emphasized that basic civic needs should not be overlooked. "Issues such as underground drainage and water supply have been pending for over two decades. These fundamental problems must be addressed first," he asserted.

Accessibility and Urban Planning Insights

Urban planner T Shankar highlighted potential accessibility challenges, noting that the chosen location along Radial Road is approximately 10 kilometers from West Tambaram Market Road and nearly 16 kilometers from East Tambaram. With the corporation serving a population of 10.7 lakh, he urged careful assessment to ensure the landmark is easily reachable for all residents. "The civic body should evaluate whether residents can conveniently access this new space," Shankar advised.

This project represents a blend of aspirational development and practical considerations, as Tambaram strives to balance aesthetic enhancements with essential civic services.
