Tamil Nadu's Nighttime Power Demand Hits Record 21,060 MW Amid Heatwave
For the second time this summer, Tamil Nadu's peak power demand has breached the 21,000-megawatt mark, setting a new record on Tuesday. The latest surge reached 21,060 MW at 10:30 PM, highlighting a significant shift in consumption patterns as nights grow increasingly hot.
Unprecedented Nighttime Peak
Unlike previous peaks that typically occurred during daylight hours, this record was set late in the evening, pointing to a sharp rise in air-conditioner usage. The previous high of 21,010 MW was recorded on April 17, but the nighttime timing of the new peak underscores changing energy demands due to extreme weather conditions.
A Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Ltd official noted, "Usually, peak power demand occurs shortly after sunset or in the afternoon. This year, nighttime power demands have been consistently higher, reflecting the intense heat affecting residents."
Near-Record Daily Consumption
On Tuesday, total power consumption in Tamil Nadu reached 462.38 million units, narrowly missing the all-time daily record by just 0.3 million units. This high consumption level was managed through a diverse mix of power sources:
- 77 million units were generated by TNPGCL's thermal, gas, and hydro plants.
- 127 million units were supplied by central power plants.
- 86.5 million units came from long- and medium-term power purchase agreements.
- 72.177 million units were met through short-term and direct power purchases from the market.
Supply Challenges and Local Interruptions
Despite officials from the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd stating that electricity demand was met without major difficulties, residents in several parts of Chennai reported power interruptions on Tuesday night. Areas affected included Kolathur, Anna Nagar West, Vanagaram, and Chitlapakkam.
TNPDCL officials attributed these disruptions to failures in the local distribution system, emphasizing that while overall supply was stable, localized issues persisted. This highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining consistent power delivery during peak demand periods.
Implications for Future Power Management
The record nighttime peak and near-record consumption signal potential strains on Tamil Nadu's power infrastructure as summer progresses. With air-conditioner use driving demand, authorities may need to enhance grid resilience and explore additional power procurement strategies to prevent widespread outages.
As heatwaves continue, monitoring and adapting to these shifting consumption patterns will be crucial for ensuring reliable electricity supply across the state.
