Thane District Launches Major Crackdown on LPG Cylinder Hoarding

In a decisive move to safeguard the supply of domestic cooking gas, the Thane district administration has executed a sweeping series of surprise inspection drives. District Collector Dr. Shrikrishna Panchal announced that a total of 121 unannounced raids were conducted across the region. The primary objectives of this intensive campaign were to deter hoarders, prevent the illegal diversion of domestic cylinders for commercial use, and guarantee an uninterrupted and timely delivery service for household consumers.

Strong Message Sent to Gas Agencies

Dr. Panchal detailed the operation following a crucial review meeting. Special teams, operating under the authority of local tehsildars, carried out these inspections. "Though no discrepancy was reported, the special teams under tehsildars conducted surprise inspections and conveyed a strong message to the 13 agencies operating in the region to discourage any form of hoarding cylinders," Panchal stated. The action served as a clear warning to all stakeholders in the LPG supply chain.

Control Room Established for Consumer Grievances

To bolster consumer support and streamline complaint resolution, the district collectorate set up a dedicated control room at the collector's office. This facility was designed to promptly address issues related to cylinder bookings or delayed deliveries. "Oil companies addressed issues in real time," Panchal confirmed, highlighting the collaborative effort between authorities and fuel suppliers to enhance service efficiency.

Public Advisory Against Panic Booking

Amid the crackdown, Dr. Panchal issued a direct appeal to the public. He urged consumers to avoid panic booking, which can strain the supply system unnecessarily. "Consumers shouldn't resort to panic booking and should book cylinders only as per actual requirement," he emphasized. This advisory aims to promote responsible consumption and ensure cylinders reach those in genuine need.

Scale of Operations and Demand in Thane

The scale of the LPG network in Thane district is substantial. Official data reveals there are 2.2 lakh domestic LPG connections and 4,430 commercial connections, all serviced by 13 major gas agencies. The daily demand averages approximately 5,922 domestic cylinders and 622 commercial cylinders, underscoring the critical importance of maintaining a smooth and fair distribution system to meet the needs of the population.
