Deputy Chairperson Shereena Shukoor presented the revised budget for 2025–26 and the budget estimate for 2026–27, outlining ambitious plans that prioritize housing, waste management, and infrastructure development.

Financial Overview and Revenue Projections

The revised budget for 2025–26 projects a total revenue exceeding Rs 200 crore. This includes a previous balance of over Rs 72 crore and anticipated receipts of more than Rs 100 crore. For the following year, the budget estimate for 2026–27 forecasts total receipts of over Rs 100 crore, incorporating a carried-forward surplus. With an estimated expenditure also surpassing Rs 100 crore, the municipality anticipates a healthy surplus of over Rs 20 crore, indicating robust financial planning.

Key Allocations for Housing and Social Welfare

A major highlight of the budget is the allocation of Rs 10 crore specifically for housing projects targeting the homeless. This initiative underscores the municipality's commitment to addressing social inequalities and providing secure living conditions for vulnerable populations. Additionally, the budget includes welfare measures for Scheduled Castes and other disadvantaged sections, ensuring that growth is inclusive and benefits all community members.

Waste Management and Environmental Initiatives

In a bid to enhance environmental sustainability, the municipality has earmarked Rs 2 crore for establishing a centralized waste management plant. Furthermore, Rs 1 crore is set aside for modern waste treatment initiatives in collaboration with BPCL Kochi Refinery. To strengthen operational efficiency, Rs 50 lakh is allocated for purchasing specially designed vehicles for the Haritha Karma Sena, aimed at improving waste collection and management processes.

Green Projects and Public Awareness

The budget also dedicates Rs 15 crore for land acquisition and green initiatives. This includes funding for public awareness campaigns and the implementation of innovative waste recycling models, such as the Thumboormuzhi model, which promotes waste segregation and reduction at the household level. These efforts are designed to foster a culture of environmental responsibility among residents.

Infrastructure and Community Development

Beyond housing and waste management, the budget prioritizes infrastructure development, sanitation, and drinking water projects. It also includes allocations for youth development, healthcare, and education, reflecting a holistic approach to urban planning. Deputy Chairperson Shukoor emphasized that these proposals, envisioned as the first budget of the municipality's tenure, are poised to drive sustainable urban development in the coming years.

Speaking to the media, Shukoor highlighted that the budget's focus on key sectors will not only improve living standards but also position Thrikkakara as a model for progressive urban governance. The comprehensive financial plan aims to balance immediate needs with long-term sustainability, ensuring that the municipality thrives economically and environmentally.
