TNPDCL Suspends Planned Power Cuts to Support Students During Exam Season
The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDCL) has issued a directive to all field officers, instructing them to halt any planned maintenance activities that involve curtailing power supply until the ongoing school examinations conclude. This order applies comprehensively across Chennai city and all districts within the state, aiming to provide a stable environment for students during this critical period.
Impact of Maintenance Work on Daily Operations
Typically, TNPDCL distribution section offices conduct periodic maintenance at substations, feeders, and transformers within their jurisdictions. These activities often necessitate power suspensions lasting at least five hours, typically from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on scheduled days. In many instances, the restoration of electricity has been delayed beyond the promised timeframe due to the complexity and severity of the work involved.
Maintenance efforts are usually intensified during the summer months, as the lower likelihood of unforeseen weather events allows for more predictable scheduling. However, this practice has historically posed challenges for school students, particularly those preparing for Class XII and X board exams held in February, March, and April. Past experiences of day-long power cuts during exam seasons prompted the state government to intervene a few years ago, directing TNPDCL to avoid maintenance work during these crucial months.
Current Measures and Exceptions
With CBSE board exams already underway, TNPDCL recently reinforced this policy by circulating a formal circular to all field officers, explicitly prohibiting power suspensions for maintenance during the exam season. In Chennai and its neighboring districts, maintenance activities were effectively stalled starting Tuesday to comply with this directive.
A senior TNPDCL official clarified the stance, stating, "Permission for regular maintenance work will not be granted until April. Field officers are only authorized to suspend power supply under unavoidable circumstances, such as emergency maintenance work." This approach ensures that students can focus on their studies without disruptions, while still allowing for essential repairs when absolutely necessary.
