Trichy MP Durai Vaiko Meets Union Minister, Demands Action on Panjapur Elevated Corridor
In a significant development aimed at addressing traffic woes, Trichy MP Durai Vaiko met with Harsh Malhotra, the Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, in New Delhi on Tuesday. The primary agenda of the meeting was to seek a crucial update on the long-pending elevated corridor project proposed for the Trichy–Madurai national highway at Panjapur.
Urgent Need to Decongest Highway and Prevent Accidents
During the discussion, Durai Vaiko emphasized that the elevated stretch is essential for decongesting the highway near the Panjapur Kalaignar Karunanidhi Bus Terminus (KKBT), which serves as the city's integrated bus stand. He urged the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to expedite the project to enhance road safety and prevent accidents in this high-traffic area.
In his formal letter to the minister, Durai Vaiko stated, "NHAI still maintains the Panjapur elevated corridor project on the Trichy–Madurai NH in the Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage. Considering the increasing traffic pressure on the highway, the Union government should facilitate measures for early implementation."
Project Details and Current Status
The proposed project, initially put forward by NHAI in 2023, involves constructing a four-lane elevated corridor spanning approximately 3 kilometers. This corridor is designed to bypass critical congestion points, including the Panjapur bus stand, vegetable market, and truck terminal areas, thereby streamlining traffic flow and reducing bottlenecks.
Despite the availability of required land with the Trichy Corporation, the project has remained stalled for over a year, with no clear timeline for commencement. Key challenges include:
- Lack of fund allocation clarity, leaving financial resources uncertain.
- Continued DPR stage status, as confirmed in a recent reply from the Union minister, indicating delays in moving to the implementation phase.
This delay persists even as traffic volumes on the highway continue to rise, exacerbating congestion and safety concerns for commuters and local residents alike.
Broader Implications and Next Steps
The elevated corridor project is not just about infrastructure development; it represents a vital step toward improving urban mobility and economic efficiency in the region. By alleviating traffic snarls, it aims to reduce travel times, lower accident risks, and support smoother logistics for businesses operating in and around Trichy.
Durai Vaiko's proactive engagement with the Union minister underscores the growing urgency among local representatives to push for timely execution of critical infrastructure initiatives. As the project awaits further governmental facilitation, stakeholders are hopeful that this meeting will catalyze faster progress and bring the much-needed relief to the highway's daily users.
