Trichy Corporation Greenlights Transformation of Underutilized Market into Sports Hub
The Trichy Corporation has officially sanctioned a significant urban redevelopment project that will see an underutilized vegetable market in Palakkarai demolished and replaced with a modern artificial turf sports facility. This initiative aims to provide a decentralized recreational space for local residents, addressing a critical need in the densely populated Arunachalam Colony.
Background of the Palakkarai Market
The market in question, situated in Arunachalam Colony under Ward 33 in Zone II, was constructed on approximately 3,000 square feet of land. Built at a cost of Rs 31.5 lakh from general funds during the 2008–09 fiscal year, it became operational in March 2012. However, its usage has dramatically declined in recent years, particularly following the Covid-19 pandemic, as vegetable vendors increasingly shifted their operations to nearby residential streets.
Beyond low patronage, the premises have become a source of community concern. Residents have reported that anti-social elements misuse the area at night for consuming liquor and drugs, creating safety issues despite the market's proximity to the Palakkarai police station.
Community-Driven Proposal for Change
With approximately 700 families residing in Arunachalam Colony—a neighborhood notably lacking adequate open spaces for sports and recreation—residents proposed converting the poorly utilized market site into a playground facility. This suggestion gained traction, leading the corporation to formulate a concrete plan under the state government's Namakku Naame scheme.
The proposed development includes installing an artificial turf equipped with floodlights and a covered roof. In a collaborative funding model, residents have committed to contributing Rs 8 lakh, while the Trichy Corporation will allocate Rs 16 lakh for the project.
Project Implementation and Future Plans
A corporation official confirmed that all necessary permissions from the municipal administration department have been secured to demolish the existing market structure and establish the artificial turf. Vendors currently operating in the area will be appropriately relocated to ensure minimal disruption.
The civic body has already floated a tender to identify a contractor, signaling that work is poised to commence shortly. To ensure the long-term sustainability of the facility, officials are developing a revenue-sharing and maintenance model. Options under consideration include leasing the turf to a private operator while guaranteeing priority access for residents of Arunachalam Colony.
Officials added that if this pilot initiative proves successful, similar artificial turf facilities could be developed in other parts of Trichy city through partnerships with local communities, potentially transforming underused spaces into vibrant recreational hubs across the urban landscape.
