Tripura CM halves convoy size, ministers cut travel to save fuel

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has decided to reduce the size of his official convoy by half starting Thursday, in solidarity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's fuel conservation initiative. The move is part of broader austerity measures introduced by the state government to optimize costs and resource efficiency.

Ministers Follow Suit

Senior cabinet members have also moved to reduce official travel arrangements. Ratan Lal Nath, minister for agriculture, power and parliamentary affairs, will no longer use an escort vehicle for local travel. Fisheries minister Sudhangsu Das said he will use only one vehicle within Agartala and will prefer train travel for visits to other districts.

Implementation of Convoy Reduction

Saha has directed the Director General of Police to implement the convoy reduction. A senior bureaucrat noted that this decision could trigger wider changes in government transport and administrative practices. The general administration (administrative reforms) department has issued a new memorandum introducing austerity measures aimed at optimizing costs and resource efficiency.

Remote Work Policy

Under the memorandum, heads of departments have been instructed to ensure that only 50% of Group C and Group D employees are physically present in offices on any given day. The remaining staff will work remotely on a rotation basis. Employees living closer to offices will be prioritized in the initial phase. Remote staff must remain available during working hours via phone and digital platforms, with provisions to return to the office in urgent situations.

This thoughtful decision is seen as a potential catalyst for broader reforms in Tripura's government transport systems. The austerity measures are expected to bring significant cost savings and set an example for other states to follow.
