Tirupati Urban Development Authority Initiates Critical Pipeline Shift for City Expansion
The Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) has made a decisive move to relocate a crucial drinking water pipeline, a step deemed essential for the planned expansion and development of the temple city of Tirupati. This strategic decision aims to address long-standing infrastructural bottlenecks and pave the way for enhanced urban connectivity.
Details of the Pipeline and Its Historical Context
The pipeline in question is part of the Telugu Ganga drinking water system, stretching 2.9 kilometers in length and 150 feet in width. It runs underground from Mangalam, adjacent to the Tirumala hills, extending to Renigunta Road and further to Daminedu near the Chennai highway. Originally laid decades ago in a zigzag pattern, this configuration has hindered modern urban planning efforts, necessitating its realignment to facilitate smoother development.
Financial Commitments and Project Delays
In 2019, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) allocated Rs 19.5 crore for a road project intended to boost city infrastructure. However, the shifting of the pipeline remained a significant obstacle, causing delays in the overall development plan. TUDA Chairman C Divakar Reddy, who recently spearheaded discussions on this issue, has committed to covering the Rs 3 crore required for the pipeline relocation from TUDA's own funds. This financial injection is expected to break the impasse and accelerate progress.
Chairman Reddy expressed his views on the matter, stating, "It is not known why the pipeline project remained pending for a long time. Now that the pipeline is all set to be shifted, the laying of the major road connecting Karakambadi Road and Renigunta Road will be launched soon." His remarks followed a Bhumi Puja ceremony, which he attended alongside MLAs Pulivarthi Nani (Chandragiri) and Arani Srinivasulu (Tirupati), symbolizing the project's official commencement.
Implications for Tirupati's Urban Landscape
The relocation of the pipeline is not merely a technical adjustment but a transformative initiative for Tirupati's urban fabric. By enabling the construction of a new road linking Karakambadi Road and Renigunta Road, this project will enhance transportation networks, support economic growth, and contribute to the city's systematic expansion. The move aligns with broader goals of sustainable development and improved public amenities in the region.
As TUDA moves forward with this critical infrastructure overhaul, stakeholders anticipate positive outcomes for local residents and businesses, marking a significant milestone in Tirupati's journey toward becoming a more organized and accessible urban center.
