Undertrial prisoner dies by suicide at Jamshedpur hospital

Jamshedpur: An undertrial prisoner died by suicide after jumping off the seventh floor of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) on Friday. The deceased, Ashok Kumar, 39, was an inmate at Ghaghidih central jail.

Incident Details

According to Sachin Das, officer-in-charge of MGM police station, Kumar was a resident of the Chowka police station area in Seraikela-Kharsawan district. He was accused of killing his son and wife on November 18, 2024. Kumar had been admitted to MGMMCH on April 19 for treatment of injuries sustained when he attempted suicide by slitting his throat with a blade.

Hospital Sources

Hospital sources revealed that Kumar was battling depression and was scheduled to be transferred to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi for further treatment. During a mandatory health check-up before the transfer, Kumar managed to evade security guards and jumped from the seventh floor, dying on the spot.

The principal of MGMMCH and the medical superintendent did not respond to calls from the Times of India when contacted.

Previous Incidents

This is not the first such incident at the hospital. Two other patients had died by suicide on the hospital premises between August last year and March this year.
