In a significant public-interest initiative, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced on Friday that vehicle owners using the Ganga Expressway will not be required to pay any user charges for the first 15 days of its operation. The exemption will remain in effect until May 13, as the 594-kilometer expressway connecting Meerut to Prayagraj was opened to the public on April 29.
Objective of the Toll Exemption
The primary goal of this decision is to increase ridership on the expressway by allowing vehicle owners to experience the smooth ride during the initial days of its opening. As a result, four-wheeler owners will save approximately Rs 1,800, which would have been the cost to travel the entire distance between Meerut and Prayagraj or vice versa. Similarly, no fees will be charged for commuting to and from the other ten districts covered by the expressway between Meerut and Prayagraj.
Implementation and Compensation
Acting on the Chief Minister's directive, the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) instructed the concessionaires—IRB Infrastructure and Adani Infrastructure—to defer toll collection on the Ganga Expressway for a period of 15 days. The state government will compensate these construction companies for the revenue loss during this period.
Project Details
The Ganga Expressway was developed within a span of three and a half years under the public-private-partnership (PPP) model. The concessionaires have secured the right to collect user fees for the next 27 years, making this initial toll-free period a strategic move to encourage public adoption of the new infrastructure.
This expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj, boosting economic activity and connectivity across the region. The toll exemption is seen as a welcome step for commuters, providing them an opportunity to experience the benefits of the new route without any financial burden.
