UPPCL Finalizes Summer Power Strategy, Aims for 34,000 MW Supply Across Uttar Pradesh
UPPCL Plans 34,000 MW Summer Power Supply for Uttar Pradesh

UPPCL Finalizes Comprehensive Strategy for Uninterrupted Summer Power Supply in Uttar Pradesh

The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has officially announced the finalization of all necessary arrangements to guarantee continuous and reliable electricity supply throughout the state during the upcoming extreme summer months. This proactive measure comes in anticipation of significantly heightened power consumption expected between April and September.

Preparing for Peak Demand: A Detailed Power Availability Plan

UPPCL has meticulously crafted a strategic plan to make approximately 34,000 megawatts (MW) of power readily available to meet the surge in demand. UPPCL Managing Director Pankaj Kumar provided detailed projections, stating that based on rigorous analysis of past consumption trends, the peak demand in June is likely to reach nearly 33,375 MW, marking one of the highest levels recorded so far. Furthermore, demand during the months of May and July is conservatively estimated to remain within the range of 31,000 MW to 32,000 MW.

To robustly address this substantial requirement, the corporation has ensured that all newly commissioned thermal power units across Uttar Pradesh are now fully operational. This critical step has been implemented to bolster the state's internal generation capacity and reduce dependency on external power sources.

Activation of Major Thermal Projects to Boost Generation

Production has successfully commenced at several key thermal power projects, including Ghatampur, Khurja, Panki, Obra, and Jawaharpur. The activation of these facilities represents a significant enhancement to the state's overall power generation infrastructure. In a move to further strengthen the supply chain, the third unit of the Ghatampur thermal power project is scheduled to become operational by April 30, adding another layer of reliability to the grid.

Securing Power Through Agreements and Exchanges

Managing Director Kumar elaborated on the sourcing strategy, revealing that around 80% of the electricity demand during peak hours will be comfortably met through long-term Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) already firmly in place with various power producers. "For any additional or unforeseen requirements, power will be efficiently sourced through established power exchanges," Kumar assured.

He further detailed an innovative arrangement, stating, "The corporation has also proactively secured approximately 4,663 million units (MU) of electricity under banking agreements with various other states. This mechanism allows UPPCL to procure power when needed during peak demand and return the equivalent amount later, ensuring optimal resource management."

Strengthening Infrastructure for Reliable Distribution

Beyond generation and procurement, parallel efforts are vigorously underway to fortify the transmission and distribution network. The primary objective is to minimize power outages caused by technical faults and system overloads. The corporation is placing a sharp focus on ensuring a uniform and high-quality power supply in both rural and urban areas. This multifaceted approach includes:

  • Increasing intensive feeder-level monitoring for real-time issue detection.
  • Implementing special drives aimed at reducing technical and commercial line losses.
  • Accelerating the widespread rollout of smart meters and advanced digital monitoring systems across the state.

These comprehensive initiatives by UPPCL underscore a committed strategy to navigate the challenges of the summer season, aiming to provide stable electricity to millions of consumers and support the state's economic and domestic activities without interruption.
