In a landmark move set to transform overnight rail travel in India, the Ministry of Railways is gearing up to introduce the Vande Bharat Sleeper train services. The first of these modern trains will commence operations this month, significantly enhancing connectivity between Kolkata and Guwahati and bridging East India with the Northeast.
A New Era for Long-Distance Rail Travel
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced that the Vande Bharat Sleeper variant is specifically designed for longer journeys, covering distances between 1,000 to 1,500 kilometres. This positions the service as an ideal choice for overnight travel, combining the speed of the Vande Bharat series with the comfort of sleeper accommodations.
"The first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train marks a new era in Indian Railways," stated the national transporter, emphasizing its blend of speed, comfort, and modern amenities. Minister Vaishnaw highlighted that 2026 is poised to be a year of major reforms for Indian Railways, with several passenger-centric initiatives on the horizon.
Production Ramped Up for 12 New Trains
Anticipating high demand for this semi-high-speed sleeper service, production has been significantly accelerated. The railway ministry has confirmed that a total of 12 Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are scheduled to be rolled out by December 2026. Each service will comprise six rakes on each side, ensuring robust operational frequency.
The inaugural route between Kolkata and Guwahati is just the beginning. The strategic plan to deploy these trains on medium to long-haul routes aims to decongest air traffic and offer a faster, more comfortable rail alternative for inter-city travel across the country.
