Varanasi Intensifies Ganga Boat Safety After Tragedies in Mathura, Jabalpur
Varanasi Boosts Ganga Boat Safety After Tragedies

In the wake of recent boat tragedies in Mathura and Jabalpur that resulted in over 20 fatalities, the Varanasi district administration has intensified safety measures on the Ganga river, where thousands of devotees, tourists, and residents rely on boat services daily. Prioritizing passenger safety and aiming to minimize disaster risks, the administration has launched a comprehensive drive to strengthen safety protocols for river transport.

Life Jacket Distribution Drive

As part of this initiative, life jackets provided by the Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority are being distributed free of charge to boat operators across the district. A distribution event was held at Namo Ghat Phase-II on Sunday, where Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue) Sadanand Gupta handed over 974 life jackets to 119 boatmen. He stated that the administration is supplying life jackets to all registered boats in a phased manner, according to their authorized passenger capacity.

Safety Guidelines for Boat Operators

Officials emphasized that boatmen and operators must thoroughly inspect the condition of all life jackets before each voyage and ensure every passenger receives one. They were strictly instructed not to exceed the approved carrying capacity of the vessel and to adhere meticulously to all safety norms for inland water transport, as well as government and district administration directives. Additionally, boat operators were cautioned against venturing into the river during adverse weather conditions, such as strong winds, storms, heavy rainfall, or a sudden rise in the Ganga’s water level. They must remain vigilant and comply with advisories from the meteorological department and local administration.

Commitment to Safety and Preparedness

This initiative aims to make boat operations on the Ganga safer, better regulated, and more accountable, while significantly improving emergency preparedness for any untoward incidents. Officials noted that the drive reflects the administration's commitment to safeguarding lives and promoting a safety culture along one of India's busiest and most revered river stretches. The district administration, in coordination with the District Disaster Management Authority, has been consistently working on accident prevention, disaster preparedness, and public awareness campaigns for safer boat operations.

Multi-Agency Support

The successful implementation of the programme was supported by personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Water Police, Aapda Mitras, and officials from various departments. Boatmen and operators were urged to embrace the principle of “Safety First,” prioritize passenger welfare at all times, and actively cooperate with the administration to ensure safe, organized, and accident-free boat operations across the district.
