The Varanasi Municipal Corporation has decided to observe a 'No Fuel Day' every Saturday, responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for fuel conservation and sustainable living. This initiative aims to curb fuel consumption and contribute to strengthening the nation's economy.
Unanimous Resolution for National Interest
Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari, along with municipal councillors, unanimously adopted the resolution during a key meeting on Wednesday. Elected representatives will voluntarily refrain from using personal petrol- or diesel-powered vehicles every Saturday. Instead, they will commute using eco-friendly alternatives such as walking, cycling, public transport, or electric vehicles.
Mayor Tiwari announced he would personally walk to the corporation office as part of the initiative. He emphasized that PM Modi has urged citizens to reduce fuel consumption to help conserve foreign exchange, and the corporation is acting in accordance with its sense of national responsibility.
Exemptions for Essential Services
Vehicles engaged in essential services, including garbage collection trucks and emergency utility vehicles, have been exempted from the initiative due to critical service obligations. The mayor appealed to corporation officials and employees to avoid using petrol and diesel vehicles at least one day a week in the national interest.
The initiative is expected to promote environmental conservation, sustainable living, and economic strengthening through fuel savings. By setting an example, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation hopes to inspire other cities to adopt similar measures.
