Varanasi Mayor Gives 15-Day Ultimatum for Drain Cleanup

Varanasi: Municipal commissioner Himanshu Nagpal has issued a 15-day ultimatum to officials to clean and repair all gully pits on a war footing to prevent waterlogging during the monsoon season. The Varanasi Municipal Corporation is undertaking a comprehensive cleaning of small and large drains, sewers, and gully pits across the city.

Mayor Reviews Progress

On Thursday, mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari reviewed the progress of drain cleaning and development works with officers from various departments. With the monsoon approaching, he emphasized the need for timely completion and quality work, issuing strict directives to officials. He instructed all departments to coordinate effectively and warned that negligent officers would face strict action. To ensure speed and transparency, accountability was fixed for each department during the review.

Departmental Responsibilities

The general department will be responsible for cleaning small drains and repairing gully pits, while the jalkal department will clear sewage lines and blockages using super sucker machines. All officials must submit daily reports on drain and gully pit cleaning progress. The mayor also ordered a special drive to remove all encroachments from drains to ensure unobstructed water flow. He has requested a complete list of drains cleaned so far for surprise inspections.
