Varanasi Municipal Corporation Intensifies Cleanliness Drive for National Ranking

The Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) has embarked on an ambitious mission to transform the city's cleanliness standards, aiming not merely to maintain hygiene but to achieve a state of impeccable order. This initiative is part of a strategic push to secure a position among the top three cities in India during the upcoming Swachhata Survekshan 2025-26 assessment.

Workshop Sets the Stage for Enhanced Efforts

In a significant step forward, a workshop was conducted on Thursday at the commissioner's auditorium to outline the comprehensive plan. Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal emphasized that the traditional approach of basic garbage collection is insufficient. He stressed the necessity of addressing every minor detail related to urban beautification to elevate Varanasi's status.

Commissioner Nagpal highlighted Varanasi's unique significance as the parliamentary constituency of the Prime Minister, noting that cleanliness remains a top priority on the national agenda. He directed officials to focus on critical areas beyond waste management, including the maintenance of public toilets, wall painting, refurbishment of rusted poles, and organization of hanging electric wires. These issues are to be rectified on an urgent basis to enhance the city's overall appeal.

Emphasis on Source Segregation and Public Awareness

The municipal commissioner underscored the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in identifying and resolving deficiencies. He advocated for strict enforcement measures, such as imposing fines on individuals who litter roads or fail to segregate dry and wet waste at the source. This aligns with the broader goal of promoting sustainable waste practices.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Savita Yadav reinforced this directive by instructing officials to intensify public awareness campaigns in wards where four-category dustbins and informational stickers have been distributed. The objective is to achieve 100% source segregation, ensuring that residents actively participate in the cleanliness drive.

Systematic Inspection and Reporting Mechanism

To facilitate effective implementation, all zonal officers, health inspectors, and tax superintendents were provided with detailed inspection checklists. They have been tasked with conducting thorough visits to their respective areas and submitting comprehensive reports. This systematic approach aims to identify shortcomings promptly and enable timely corrective actions, thereby streamlining the city's cleanliness operations.

Past Performance and Future Aspirations

In the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, Varanasi city achieved the 17th position among cities with a population exceeding 10 lakh, while the Varanasi Cantonment Board secured an impressive 7th rank nationally and first place in Uttar Pradesh. Notably, Varanasi was honored with the Best Ganga Town Award, recognizing its exemplary waste management and cleanliness efforts along the sacred Ganga River.

Building on this recognition, the VMC is now determined to elevate its performance further. By integrating beautification projects with rigorous waste management protocols, Varanasi aims to not only improve its ranking but also set a benchmark for urban cleanliness across the country. The concerted efforts reflect a holistic vision to transform the city into a model of hygiene and aesthetic appeal.
