Varanasi Municipal Corporation and BHU Forge Historic Partnership for City Development
VMC and BHU Join Forces for Varanasi's Sustainable Growth

Varanasi Municipal Corporation and BHU Unite for Comprehensive City Development

In a significant move aimed at fostering all-round development, enhancing environmental sustainability, and improving civic amenities, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) have announced a joint collaboration. This partnership marks a historic step towards the comprehensive and planned growth of the ancient city, with both institutions reaching a consensus on key initiatives.

High-Level Talks Lead to Formal Agreement

During high-level discussions held between Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal and BHU Vice-Chancellor Prof Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, an agreement was reached to sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the near future. This MoU will solidify the commitment of both entities to work together on various urban development projects.

Key Components of the Partnership

The collaboration encompasses several critical areas designed to benefit both the city and the university community:

  • Academic Coordination and Internships: Annually, 50 BHU students will have the opportunity to intern at the VMC, gaining hands-on experience in urban planning and social entrepreneurship.
  • Infrastructure and Beautification: Priority projects include the beautification of BHU's outer areas, such as the Malviya Gate to Dafi corridor, and the installation of a new drainage line in Kandwa to prevent waterlogging.
  • Campus Services: The VMC will provide services for cleanliness management and control of stray animals within the university campus, directly benefiting thousands of students and employees.
  • Environmental Collaboration: BHU's expert botanists will actively assist in maintaining the city's largest Miyawaki urban forest in the Domri area, with regular inspections and technical guidance for plant growth.

Resolution of Longstanding Issues

An important outcome of the talks was the resolution of a long-standing deadlock over property tax between VMC and BHU. The VMC has granted concessions on some old dues, and in return, BHU has agreed to pay the remaining outstanding amount in instalments, paving the way for smoother cooperation.

This partnership is expected to set a precedent for similar collaborations between municipal bodies and educational institutions across India, driving sustainable urban development and community engagement.
