The Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) has formulated a comprehensive development plan valued at Rs48.88 crore, aimed at modernising the city's infrastructure while maintaining its ancient cultural and historical essence.
Upgrading Religious and Tourist Destinations
Under this proposed initiative, key religious and tourist sites will be enhanced, and public infrastructure across the city will be developed in the traditional architectural style of Banaras to further solidify Varanasi's global identity.
Modern Parking Facility in Sarnath
A major component of the project is the construction of a modern automated sliding and puzzle parking facility in Sarnath, one of the city's most frequented tourist destinations. This facility is expected to improve traffic management and alleviate congestion in the area.
Reorganisation of Vegetable Market
The civic body also plans to reorganise the vegetable market near Manikarnika Ghat and develop a dedicated two-wheeler parking area to better manage crowds and traffic flow.
Facilities at Pishachmochan Kund
To enhance amenities at Pishachmochan Kund, which sees large gatherings during Pitru Paksha and other religious occasions, the VMC will allocate Rs2.34 crore for constructing toilets, drinking water facilities, and accommodation-related infrastructure for devotees.
Beautification and Heritage Upgrades
According to Himanshu Nagpal, beautification work has already commenced at major intersections across the city. The initiative began with Mint House and the Nadesar trijunction, where heritage-style traffic booths and large antique-style clocks reflecting Banaras' traditional architecture have been installed.
In the first phase, crossings at Kachhari, Police Line, Sundarpur, and Bhikharipur have been upgraded at a cost of Rs3.10 crore.
Spiritual Gateway on VIP Route
The VMC is also planning to transform the VIP route connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport at Babatpur with the city into a spiritual gateway. Grand Mahakal pillars will be installed along the route at a cost of Rs2.35 crore to create a distinctive welcome experience for visitors arriving in Varanasi.
Heritage Lighting Project
In another major project, the stretch from Maidagin Crossing to Girjaghar Crossing via Godaulia will be illuminated with heritage-themed lighting at a cost of Rs3.98 crore. This project aims to enhance the city's night-time aesthetics and further highlight the architectural grandeur of Kashi.
Balancing Modernity and Heritage
Officials stated that the projects are designed to balance modern urban infrastructure with the city's rich spiritual and cultural heritage, improving facilities for both residents and the millions of pilgrims and tourists who visit Varanasi annually.
