The West Bengal government on Tuesday ordered the immediate closure of all unauthorised toll and drop gates operating across the state. Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal issued the directive targeting non-approved operational collection points, including barricaded structures and drop gates, that function without sanction from competent authorities.
Key Details of the Order
According to the order, any collection of fees, charges, or levies at such unauthorised points must cease with immediate effect. A government official revealed that illegal toll collections were prevalent in districts such as East Midnapore, Birbhum, and North and South 24 Parganas. In many cases, local political functionaries are allegedly involved in these unauthorised collections.
Action Plan for District Magistrates
Chief Secretary Agarwal has directed all district magistrates to identify illegal toll and drop gates in their respective areas and ensure their shutdown. The DMs have been instructed to prevent the re-establishment of any drop gates without proper government authorisation. Additionally, the order mandates that DMs submit a comprehensive list of all illegal toll points to the under secretary by Friday noon. The list must include details on the collecting authorities and the duration of tenders, along with information on illegal points.
This move aims to curb the exploitation of commuters and restore lawful collection practices across the state.
