Welfare of contract workers priority of Central Government: MP

Former Union Minister for Information Broadcasting Anurag Thakur stated on Wednesday that the welfare and protection of the rights of contract workers is a priority for the Central Government. He was speaking at a one-day Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Employees State Insurance (ESI) Awareness and Grievance Redressal Camp organized for contract workers at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Hamirpur.

Government Commitment to Social Security

Thakur highlighted the Central Government’s commitment to strengthening social security for workers. He praised the dedication and sincerity of contract workers, describing them as experienced, hardworking, honest, and fully committed to their responsibilities. He added that the NIT and the people of the state recognize their contributions.

Analogy of a Grand Structure

Drawing an analogy, Thakur said that while people admire the height and beauty of a grand structure, they often overlook the strong foundation that supports it. He congratulated the employees for their excellent maintenance of the institution and for ensuring the smooth functioning of its day-to-day administrative affairs.

Open Discussion on EPF and ESI Issues

The Hamirpur MP urged workers to openly discuss issues related to EPF and ESI, work together to find solutions, and spread awareness among one another. He emphasized the importance of collective effort in addressing grievances.

Labour Law Reforms

Thakur noted that the Central Government had consolidated 29 central labour laws into four Labour Codes, replacing provisions that were inadequate for labourers and contract workers at the grassroots level. He said the four Labour Codes provide stronger legal protection to workers’ rights and ensure their interests are safeguarded in accordance with the spirit of the Constitution.
