State Government Targets Urban Infrastructure Improvement and Waste-to-Revenue Initiatives
The West Bengal state government is focusing on enhancing urban infrastructure and transforming waste into a valuable resource through innovative recycling programs. State Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul emphasized that waste should no longer be considered garbage but rather an economic opportunity. The government has outlined plans to recycle plastic and construction debris into biogas, paver blocks, and alternatives to coal.
Minister Paul recently held meetings with vendors and discussed a scientific waste management initiative for the Asansol-Durgapur region with Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. This discussion took place during a review of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 in Delhi.
Monsoon Preparedness and Infrastructure Repairs in Kolkata
Simultaneously, civic agencies are preparing for monsoon-related infrastructure work in Kolkata. Major repairs are likely on the nearly 2-kilometer Jinjirabazar–Taratala stretch, which has long been plagued by potholes, mud, and waterlogging. The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation are expected to begin work before the onset of the rains following a coordination meeting scheduled for this week.
These initiatives reflect the government's commitment to sustainable urban development and efficient waste management, aiming to create a cleaner and more resilient city infrastructure.
