Krishnagiri: Tensions escalated in Pochampalli town on Monday when more than 50 women blocked a road, demanding the removal of a government-run Tasmac liquor outlet located on the Pochampally–Sandur Road. The protestors objected to the outlet, which has been operating for over a decade on this busy stretch, citing its proximity to residential houses, temples, markets, and commercial establishments.
Long-Standing Demand for Closure
Residents have been pressing for the closure of the outlet for the past three years, staging frequent protests and submitting petitions to officials, but no action has been taken yet, said M Madheswari, a protester. The situation gained renewed momentum after the Tamil Nadu government recently ordered the closure of 717 Tasmac outlets across the state. Villagers have now intensified their demand that the Pochampalli outlet also be shut down.
Previous Protests and Escalation
Two weeks ago, locals had staged a similar road blockade, but no efforts were made to address their concerns. This inaction forced women to gather again in front of the shop and intensify their protest. The demonstrators remained firm in their demand, insisting that the outlet be removed immediately to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
Police Intervention and Resolution
A police team led by Bargur DSP Dhanasekar and Pochampally inspector Gopalakrishnan intervened and held talks with the agitators. After lengthy discussions, the women dispersed peacefully following assurances from authorities that appropriate steps would soon be initiated to remove the shop. The protest highlighted the growing discontent among residents regarding the presence of liquor outlets in residential areas.
The incident underscores the challenges faced by local communities in addressing long-standing grievances related to alcohol sales near sensitive locations. With the state government's recent crackdown on Tasmac outlets, residents hope that their demands will finally be met.
