The Yamunanagar Jagadhri Municipal Corporation (MC) has launched a mega cleanliness drive in the aftermath of a sanitation workers' strike that disrupted waste collection services. The drive aims to restore cleanliness and hygiene across the twin cities, which had witnessed a pile-up of garbage during the strike period.
Background of the Strike
The sanitation workers had gone on strike demanding better wages, improved working conditions, and timely payment of salaries. The strike lasted for several days, leading to a significant accumulation of waste in residential areas, markets, and public spaces. Residents faced health hazards and inconvenience due to the uncollected garbage.
Details of the Cleanliness Drive
The MC has deployed additional staff and machinery to expedite the cleaning process. Special teams have been formed to cover all wards, with a focus on high-density areas and commercial zones. The drive includes door-to-door waste collection, sweeping of streets, and cleaning of drains. The corporation has also appealed to citizens to cooperate by segregating waste at source and using designated dustbins.
Municipal Commissioner Rajiv Kumar stated, 'We are committed to ensuring a clean environment. The drive will continue until normalcy is fully restored. We have also initiated talks with the striking workers to address their grievances.'
Response from Workers and Public
Following the launch of the drive, some sanitation workers have resumed duties, while others remain on strike. The MC has assured that no coercive action will be taken against the strikers and that their demands will be considered. Residents have welcomed the initiative, expressing relief that the authorities are taking the matter seriously.
Long-term Measures
To prevent such disruptions in the future, the MC plans to revise the contract terms for sanitation workers and improve communication channels. A grievance redressal mechanism will also be set up to address worker issues promptly. Additionally, the corporation is exploring the use of technology for efficient waste management, including GPS tracking of garbage vehicles and real-time monitoring of cleanliness levels.
The mega cleanliness drive is expected to continue for at least a week, with regular reviews to assess progress and make necessary adjustments.
