Agricultural University Established in Mandya to Boost Farmer Development
In a significant development for Karnataka's agricultural sector, Agriculture Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy has announced the establishment of a new Agricultural University in Mandya district. The minister, who also holds charge of the district, made this announcement during the inauguration of a machinery distribution program organized by the Department of Agriculture at the university premises.
Modernization Through Hi-tech Harvest Hub Initiative
Highlighting the government's commitment to agricultural modernization, Cheluvarayaswamy revealed that farm machinery worth over Rs 2,000 crore has been distributed to farmers across Karnataka over the past three years. As part of this initiative, more than 400 Hi-tech Harvest Hub machines have already been provided to agricultural communities.
The minister emphasized that substantial subsidies are being extended for setting up these Hi-tech Harvest Hubs — with Rs 50 lakh allocated for Scheduled Tribes and Rs 40 lakh for the general category. He noted that this scheme is fully funded by the state government and represents one of the first initiatives of its kind in the country.
Addressing Labor Shortages Through Mechanization
Cheluvarayaswamy stressed the importance of agricultural mechanization, particularly at a time when farm labor is becoming increasingly scarce. "These advanced machines are highly effective in harvesting multiple crops," the minister stated, adding that the initiative is expected to significantly reduce operational costs while improving efficiency for farmers throughout the state.
Expanded Crop Insurance Coverage
Reflecting on other agricultural achievements under the current administration, the minister reported that crop insurance coverage has expanded substantially — from approximately 12 lakh farmers previously to over 28 lakh farmers now. Nearly Rs 6,000 crore has been disbursed in insurance claims to support agricultural communities during challenging periods.
Regional Development Milestone
Srirangapatna MLA and CESC Chairman Ramesh Bandisiddegowda praised the establishment of the Agricultural University in Mandya, noting that this predominantly agrarian district will benefit significantly from this educational institution. "Several farmer-centric schemes introduced by the minister have strengthened the rural economy," Bandisiddegowda stated, adding that the university represents a major milestone in regional agricultural development.
Immediate Distribution of Farm Equipment
During the inauguration event, 13 Hi-tech Harvest Hub machines were distributed to beneficiaries by Minister Cheluvarayaswamy. The ceremony was attended by DC Kumara, ZP CEO KR Nandini, and Agriculture Department Joint Director Ashok, among other officials.
The minister called upon the farming community to fully utilize the resources and opportunities provided by the new Agricultural University, emphasizing that such institutions play a crucial role in supporting the overall development of agricultural practices and farmer livelihoods across Karnataka.
