Ahmedabad Green Mobility Boost: 1,000 Electric Buses Approved Under PM E-DRIVE Scheme
In a significant move towards sustainable urban transport, Ahmedabad is set to enhance its public transit system with the procurement of 1,000 electric AC buses. This initiative falls under the Centre's PM E-DRIVE Scheme, a collaborative effort between the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) and Convergence Energy Services Ltd.
Joint Tender Process and Allocation
The allocation of these buses was finalized through a joint tender process, marking a pivotal step in Ahmedabad's commitment to eco-friendly mobility. The city's transport authorities have been actively working to modernize and greenify public transportation, aligning with national goals for reduced carbon emissions.
Board Approval and Implementation
On March 5, the board of directors of Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd held a crucial meeting where they approved the issuance of a work order. This order authorizes the procurement of the 1,000 electric buses under a gross cost contract-based agreement. The buses will be collectively deployed for the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) and the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), ensuring widespread accessibility and efficiency.
Current and Future Electric Fleet Expansion
Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited currently operates a fleet of 350 buses, with 200 already being electric. In the near future, an additional 250 new electric buses are scheduled for launch. Furthermore, strategic planning is underway to completely convert the entire BRTS bus fleet in Ahmedabad to electric, underscoring a long-term vision for a zero-emission public transport network.
Commitment to Sustainable Development
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, along with its managed organizations AMTS and BRTS, has been making continuous efforts to promote green mobility. These initiatives aim to provide environmentally friendly, modern, and sustainable public transport facilities, enhancing the quality of life for residents while contributing to cleaner air and reduced traffic congestion.
This procurement under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme represents a major leap forward in Ahmedabad's journey towards becoming a model city for sustainable urban transport in India.
