Authorities in Prayagraj district have leveraged this technology to identify a staggering 42,000 applicants who falsely claimed to be homeless, thereby attempting to fraudulently access benefits meant for the underprivileged.

Officials involved with the scheme explained that while online applications were accepted in previous years, a revolutionary new system was introduced last year. Under this framework, beneficiaries were required to conduct a "self-survey" through a dedicated mobile application. Applicants had to upload their personal details along with photographs of their existing houses. This digital submission was complemented by traditional surveys conducted by field staff to ensure comprehensive coverage.

The district received a total of 1,64,953 applications from across its 23 development blocks. While many genuine applicants living in huts and kutcha houses rightfully sought assistance, officials discovered that a substantial number of ineligible individuals had also infiltrated the list. During the initial verification phase, 61,566 applications were flagged as suspicious and forwarded to the respective blocks for detailed scrutiny.

After thorough physical verification and cross-checking, approximately 42,000 applicants were conclusively found to be ineligible for the PMAY benefits. The process of removing their names from the beneficiary list is currently in progress, ensuring that resources are directed solely towards those in genuine need.

Bhupendra Singh, the Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency, confirmed that the verification of applications has been completed and that decisive action is being taken against the ineligible beneficiaries. He elaborated on the AI mechanism, stating, "The system automatically analysed the uploaded photographs and flagged applications where permanent structures such as concrete walls or roofs were visible. Subsequent field inquiries revealed that many of these applicants already owned pucca houses, which clearly disqualifies them from the scheme."
