Andhra Pradesh Unveils Landmark Energy Efficiency Initiative for PMAY Beneficiaries
In a groundbreaking move set to redefine sustainable housing in India, the Andhra Pradesh State Housing Corporation Limited (APSHCL) has forged a strategic partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and AP SEEDCO. The collaboration, formalized through a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to roll out energy-efficient, star-rated appliances to an initial cohort of five lakh beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). This initiative marks the largest energy efficiency drive ever undertaken within the PMAY framework, promising significant environmental and economic benefits.
Formal Exchange and High-Level Endorsement
The MoU, originally inked during India Energy Week (IEW) 2026 in Goa, was ceremoniously exchanged on Monday in Naidupeta. The event was graced by the presence of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Housing Minister K Parthasarathy, and Municipal and Urban Development Minister K Narayana. Senior officials, including Special Chief Secretary (Housing) Ajay Jain, Principal Secretary (MA&UD) S Suresh Kumar, and APSHCL Managing Director Arun Babu, participated in the document exchange with EESL CEO Akhilesh Kumar Dixit and CGM Animesh Mishra.
Chief Minister Naidu seized the occasion to voice strong support for the Union government's appeal for a people-led national movement focused on energy efficiency and renewable energy. He reiterated the state government's unwavering commitment to achieving permanent housing for all eligible households by the end of 2029, operating in a saturation mode. "As a responsible government dedicated to sustainable economic development and combating climate change, we are determined to transform these lakhs of PMAY households into energy-efficient homes with the active participation of the residents themselves," Naidu stated. "These proactive measures will not only elevate the quality of life but also guarantee substantial monetary savings for the beneficiaries."
Transformative Impact and National Significance
Ajay Jain, Special Chief Secretary (Housing), hailed the initiative as a defining moment in India's journey toward sustainable housing, underscoring its potential for transformative impact. The program entails replacing conventional electrical fixtures in PMAY homes with advanced, energy-efficient appliances, thereby reducing energy consumption and lowering utility bills for households.
EESL CEO Akhilesh Kumar Dixit praised the endeavor as a national milestone, emphasizing that Andhra Pradesh has established a powerful benchmark in scaling sustainable housing solutions. This ambitious project is projected to result in an annual reduction of 456.61 kg of CO₂ emissions per household, contributing significantly to environmental conservation and climate change mitigation efforts. The initiative aligns with broader national goals of promoting green energy and enhancing energy security across the country.
By integrating energy efficiency into affordable housing, Andhra Pradesh sets a precedent for other states to follow, fostering a greener, more sustainable future for millions of Indians.
