Andhra Pradesh's Clean Cooking Initiative Earns National Recognition as Benchmark Program
In a significant development, the Union government has officially recognized the collaborative partnership between Andhra Pradesh and the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) under the National Efficient Cooking Programme as a national benchmark for clean cooking reforms. This landmark endorsement positions the southern state at the forefront of India's clean energy transition, setting a powerful example for other regions to follow.
Phase One Success Leads to Expanded Implementation
The initial phase of this ambitious program has already demonstrated remarkable success. EESL, in close collaboration with the Andhra Pradesh Women and Child Welfare Department, supplied energy-efficient induction stoves along with high-quality cooking utensils to 11,400 Anganwadi Centres across the state. Independent third-party assessments conducted during this implementation phase reported exceptionally high satisfaction levels among the beneficiaries, validating the program's effectiveness and positive impact.
Building upon this solid foundation, phase two of the initiative has now commenced with renewed momentum. Authorities have placed substantial orders to supply induction stoves to the remaining 44,346 Anganwadi Centres, with the ambitious goal of achieving 100% coverage across all 55,746 centers throughout Andhra Pradesh. This comprehensive approach ensures that clean cooking technology reaches every corner of the state's childcare infrastructure.
National Praise for Visionary Leadership
Senior Union officials have publicly praised the Andhra Pradesh government's forward-thinking approach and early decision-making in implementing this transformative program. At a time when numerous countries worldwide are grappling with energy crises and supply shortfalls, Andhra Pradesh's proactive stance has emerged as a model of sustainable governance.
Anil Mallik, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development, offered particular commendation during a national conference held in Udaipur, Rajasthan. He specifically highlighted the state government's bold decision to supply energy-efficient induction stoves with accompanying utensils to all Anganwadi Centres on a saturation basis, with crucial support from EESL.
"With this timely initiative, Andhra Pradesh has taken the lead in eliminating fossil fuels in all Anganwadis, and others will have to follow suit sooner or later," Mallik stated emphatically, underscoring the program's pioneering nature.
Multiple Benefits and Broader Implications
Lav Agarwal, Additional Secretary in the same department, described this comprehensive step as a benchmark initiative with far-reaching benefits spanning multiple domains. The program delivers significant economic advantages through reduced energy costs, substantial ecological benefits by decreasing fossil fuel dependence, and meaningful women's empowerment through improved cooking conditions and reduced health risks associated with traditional cooking methods.
Following clear direction from Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, PS Pradyumna, Secretary to the Chief Minister, conducted an online meeting with Women & Child Welfare Secretary A Surya Kumari and Director M Venu Gopal Reddy to coordinate implementation efforts. Meanwhile, Akhilesh Kumar Dixit, CEO of EESL, emphasized the urgent need to complete the supply of induction stoves to all 55,746 Anganwadi Centres and establish these centers as exemplary role models for the entire nation.
This recognition by the Union government not only validates Andhra Pradesh's progressive approach but also establishes a clear roadmap for other states to adopt similar clean cooking initiatives. The program represents a significant stride toward environmental sustainability while simultaneously advancing women-centric welfare through improved cooking infrastructure at critical childcare centers across the state.
