APSPDCL Sets Sights on Becoming India's Premier Power Distribution Company
In a bold declaration of intent, the Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) has announced its ambitious goal to emerge as the country's number one power distribution company. The Vijayawada-based utility has developed a comprehensive strategic action plan that prioritizes clean energy adoption, operational efficiency, and consumer-centric electricity services.
Ambitious Solar Expansion Targets Under PM-KUSUM Scheme
At the heart of APSPDCL's transformation strategy lies an aggressive solarization plan. The company has established ambitious targets for feeder-level solar implementation under the PM-KUSUM Scheme 2.0 programme, spanning the financial years 2026–27 through 2029–30. According to APSPDCL chairman and managing director Siva Sankar Lotheti, the company has prepared detailed plans to achieve solar capacity of 550 MW annually over the next four years, culminating in a total solarization target of 2,200 MW.
"We have readied comprehensive plans to achieve solar capacity of 550 MW every year in the next four years and take the total solarization target to 2,200 MW over this period," stated Lotheti during a recent announcement.
Grid Stability Through Advanced Battery Storage Systems
To ensure grid stability and efficient power management as renewable energy capacity expands, APSPDCL is implementing a substantial 500 MW/1,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in its initial phase. This large-scale energy storage solution represents a critical component of the company's strategy to manage the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources while maintaining reliable power distribution.
Expert Collaboration for Energy Efficiency Enhancement
In a significant development for strengthening energy efficiency initiatives, APSPDCL's CMD recently conducted a virtual interaction with distinguished energy expert Ajay Mathur from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. The meeting, attended by directors Ayub Khan and Guravaiah along with senior company officials, focused on advancing energy-efficient technologies within the power sector.
Mathur expressed appreciation for the state government's efforts in promoting distributed renewable energy, enhancing discom capabilities, and integrating energy-efficient technologies throughout the power sector. He further assured complete support for Andhra Pradesh's initiatives in the clean energy transition.
Kuppam Constituency: India's First Net-Zero Model
Highlighting another major initiative, the CMD revealed that the state government is developing Kuppam constituency in Chittoor district as India's inaugural net-zero model constituency under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. This groundbreaking programme aims to promote sustainable development and facilitate large-scale adoption of green energy solutions.
Under this innovative initiative, solar installations with a capacity of 4.36 MW are being established to benefit 7,489 Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe consumers. Additionally, the project includes implementation of a 50 MW/100 MWh BESS project alongside 39.75 MW rooftop solar systems covering more than 48,000 residential consumers.
Electric Mobility Infrastructure Expansion
APSPDCL is also placing significant emphasis on electric mobility infrastructure development. According to Siva Sankar, plans are actively underway to establish electric vehicle public charging stations at 162 strategic locations across the region. This initiative is being implemented through collaboration with Energy Efficiency Services Limited and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, aiming to accelerate the adoption of sustainable technologies and improve overall energy efficiency within the state's power distribution network.
The comprehensive strategic plan reflects APSPDCL's commitment to transforming Andhra Pradesh's power distribution landscape through innovative clean energy solutions, technological advancements, and sustainable development initiatives that position the company for national leadership in the power distribution sector.
