Bengal Govt Announces 7th Pay Commission, Free Travel for Women

The West Bengal government has unveiled a series of major initiatives aimed at benefiting state employees and women. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission for state government employees, along with free bus travel for women and the launch of 'Annapurna Bhandar' to provide subsidized food items.

7th Pay Commission for State Employees

The state cabinet has approved the formation of the 7th Pay Commission, which will recommend revised pay scales and allowances for approximately 10 lakh state government employees and pensioners. The commission is expected to submit its report within six months, and the new pay structure will be implemented retroactively from April 1, 2026. This move is anticipated to benefit a large section of the workforce and boost the state's economy.

Free Bus Travel for Women

In a significant step towards women's empowerment, the government announced that women will be allowed to travel for free on all state-run buses. The scheme, named 'Laxmi Rath', will cover both urban and rural routes. Women will need to obtain a special pass from designated counters to avail of this facility. The initiative aims to enhance mobility and access to opportunities for women across the state.

Annapurna Bhandar for Subsidized Food

The government also launched the 'Annapurna Bhandar' scheme, under which essential food items such as rice, wheat, pulses, and cooking oil will be sold at subsidized rates through fair price shops. The scheme targets low-income families and aims to ensure food security. Beneficiaries will be identified based on the state's socio-economic database, and the subsidies will be funded by the state exchequer.

Chief Minister Banerjee stated that these initiatives are part of the government's commitment to inclusive development and social welfare. She also urged the central government to provide additional support for such schemes. The announcements have been welcomed by employee unions and women's groups, though opposition parties have questioned the financial viability of the measures.

The state finance department will allocate necessary funds for these schemes in the upcoming budget. Implementation details, including the timeline and eligibility criteria, are expected to be released soon. These steps are seen as a major push by the state government ahead of the next assembly elections.
