Union Budget 2026-27 Sanctions Major Funds for Pune's Development

In a significant move aimed at accelerating economic growth, the Union government has announced substantial funding for Pune's infrastructure and development projects in the budget for the fiscal year 2026-27. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tabled the budget, which includes a dedicated allocation of Rs 5,000 crore for the establishment of the 'Pune Growth Hub' over the next five years. Additionally, Rs 517 crore has been earmarked for the extension of the Pune Metro, marking a dual boost for the city's urban and economic landscape.

Details of the Pune Growth Hub Initiative

The Pune Growth Hub is envisioned as a transformative project designed to unlock the full potential of the Pune Metropolitan Region. According to city MP and Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol, the allocated funds will benefit a vast area encompassing Pune district, Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, three cantonments, seven municipalities, along with MSRDC, MIDC, and other included regions. This coverage spans a total area of 6,914.26 square kilometres, highlighting the project's extensive scope.

Mohol elaborated that the project is a collaborative effort involving the Maharashtra government, NITI Aayog, and the Pune International Centre. A comprehensive economic master plan for the Pune Metropolitan Region is currently being prepared, with three committees already established to oversee its implementation. The overall plan is projected to be worth Rs 80,000 crore, aiming to position Pune as a leading global centre in technology, industry-manufacturing, education, cultural heritage, and Artificial Intelligence.

Objectives and Expected Impact

The primary objectives of the Pune Growth Hub include:

  • Creating abundant employment opportunities through large-scale investment attraction.
  • Developing robust infrastructure to support growth in key sectors.
  • Fostering significant advancements in technology, manufacturing, education, and tourism.

Mohol emphasized that Pune is among the cities being developed as growth engines for the country, and this budget provision will greatly benefit the region. The project is expected to not only enhance Pune's status as an important industrial and economic hub but also contribute to India's ambition of becoming the world's third-largest economy.

Complementary Infrastructure and Social Initiatives

State Minister Madhuri Misal highlighted that the Pune Metro, Pune Growth Hub, and the Pune-Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad railway corridor will collectively provide a major impetus to the development of Pune and its surrounding areas. In addition to infrastructure, the budget includes several social welfare measures:

  1. Market Access for Women's Self-Help Groups: Following the success of the Lakhpati Didi scheme, a new initiative has been announced to provide market access, along with a separate system to encourage women-led industries, aimed at increasing women's participation in the economy.
  2. Hostels for Women: The establishment of hostels for women in every district has been proposed to support their safety and mobility.
  3. Healthcare Strengthening: Casualty and trauma centres will be started in every district hospital to improve healthcare services, particularly benefiting citizens in underprivileged areas.

Misal described this budget as one that accelerates development, creates employment, and propels the nation towards greater economic resilience. The integration of these projects and schemes underscores a holistic approach to fostering sustainable growth and inclusivity in the Pune region.
