The Indian government is reportedly considering a significant security measure for the NEET UG 2026 retest by involving the Indian Air Force (IAF) to transport examination papers across the country. This move comes in the wake of a major paper leak that compromised the integrity of the medical entrance exam earlier this year.
Proposal to Use Air Force for Secure Transport
According to sources, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which oversees the National Testing Agency (NTA), has proposed using IAF aircraft to fly question paper bundles to various examination centers. The aim is to minimize human handling and reduce the risk of leaks. The NTA had faced severe criticism after the NEET UG 2025 paper leak, which led to the cancellation of the exam and a subsequent retest.
Enhanced Security Protocols
Under the proposed plan, the question papers would be transported directly from a secure printing facility to designated airports, where IAF planes would fly them to regional hubs. From there, armed escorts would deliver them to examination centers on the day of the test. This would replace the current system of using private couriers and state police.
Officials believe that the involvement of the Air Force would drastically reduce the number of people handling the papers, thereby tightening security. The NTA is also considering other measures such as biometric verification of candidates and real-time CCTV monitoring at all centers.
Background of the Paper Leak
The NEET UG 2025 exam, held in May 2025, was marred by a paper leak that affected thousands of students. The leak was traced to a printing press in Jharkhand, leading to the arrest of several individuals. The government subsequently ordered a retest, which was conducted in July 2025. However, the incident raised serious questions about the NTA's ability to conduct high-stakes exams securely.
Government's Response
In response to the fiasco, the government formed a high-level committee to review the entire examination process. The committee's recommendations included the use of the Air Force for paper transport, as well as the implementation of blockchain technology for paper tracking. The Ministry of Education has also proposed stricter penalties for those involved in paper leaks, including life imprisonment.
The NTA is expected to finalize the security plan for NEET UG 2026 by August 2026. The exam is scheduled for May 2026, with the retest likely to be held in July if needed. The government has assured students that every possible measure will be taken to ensure the exam's integrity.
Meanwhile, student groups have welcomed the move, though some have expressed concerns about logistical challenges. The NTA has stated that it will conduct a pilot test of the new system in select cities before full implementation.
