Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Bhagirath Choudhary announced a new initiative to support farmers in marketing produce such as potato, onion, and tomato across the country. Under this scheme, the central government will bear the transportation costs, enabling better market access and ensuring remunerative prices for farmers.
Visit to ICAR Complex
Speaking during a visit to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) Complex for the North-Eastern Hill Region at Umiam in Ri-Bhoi district on Sunday, Choudhary emphasized the importance of promoting natural farming to reduce dependency on chemical fertilizers. He noted that fertilizer imports impose a significant economic burden on the nation.
Addressing Climate Change Challenges
The minister stressed the need to address emerging challenges posed by climate change. He called for stronger collaboration between scientists and farmers to develop and adopt climate-resilient crops and innovative technologies, according to an ICAR statement.
This initiative is expected to benefit farmers across the country by reducing post-harvest losses and increasing their income through direct market linkages.
