New Delhi: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday distributed bicycles to more than 500 meritorious girl students at an event in RK Puram. She also announced that all girls taking admission to Class IX in government schools would soon receive bicycles under a new initiative aimed at promoting girls' education.
CM Gupta's Vision for Girls' Education
Speaking at the event, CM Gupta emphasized the importance of educating daughters. She stated, "The education of daughters is not just important for families, but the foundation of a brighter future for the nation." She further added that "the bicycle is not merely a means of transport but a tool that will boost confidence, independence and dreams of young students." Such efforts are crucial for promoting girls' education and encouraging them to move ahead in life, she said.
Distribution and Impact
The bicycles were distributed to girls who passed Classes X and XII to help them continue their education with ease, safety, and self-reliance. CM Gupta noted that the Delhi government's scheme would benefit around 1.3 lakh girls who enrol in Class IX in government schools every year. She confirmed that the process of distribution under the scheme would begin after the summer vacation.
Commitment to Women's Empowerment
"It is an important step towards women's empowerment," CM Gupta said. She reiterated that the Delhi government is committed to ensuring that no girl has to compromise on her studies or aspirations because of lack of resources. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce dropout rates and encourage more girls to pursue higher education.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including education department officials and local representatives. Parents and students expressed gratitude for the scheme, which they believe will make a tangible difference in their daily lives. Many students shared that the bicycle would save them travel time and allow them to focus more on their studies.
This initiative is part of a broader set of measures by the Delhi government to improve educational outcomes and gender equality. In recent years, the government has also introduced free education, scholarships, and improved infrastructure in schools. The bicycle distribution scheme is seen as a practical step to address the challenges faced by girl students, particularly those from economically weaker backgrounds.
