Delhi-Dehradun Expressway Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway on Tuesday, a Rs 12,000-crore project hailed as a major milestone in the capital's development. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu praised the initiative, describing it as transformative for regional connectivity and economic growth.
Special Occasion Marks Infrastructure Push
Joining the program virtually on the birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta termed the occasion "special and auspicious." She credited Prime Minister Modi for bringing unprecedented momentum to infrastructure development in Delhi, noting that projects worth nearly Rs 1.25 lakh crore are currently underway in the city under the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
"This expressway is a true confluence of development and faith," Gupta said, highlighting how it links Delhi's modern infrastructure with Uttarakhand's spiritual significance. She emphasized that the corridor will enhance connectivity while significantly contributing to economic growth and tourism in the region.
Dramatic Reduction in Travel Time
The new expressway is expected to reduce travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from approximately 6–7 hours to just 2.5 hours, bringing substantial relief to commuters and boosting regional economic activity. Gupta pointed out that India's expressway network has expanded to over 3,000 kilometers, while the national highway network has grown to nearly 1.46 lakh kilometers, reflecting the government's commitment to infrastructure expansion.
Seamless Connectivity and Sustainability Focus
Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu highlighted the expressway's seamless, signal-free connectivity, beginning from key points such as Akshardham, Geeta Colony, and Shastri Park. "It promises to significantly decongest city roads while catalyzing regional trade, tourism, and economic activity," he stated.
Sandhu also emphasized the project's strong commitment to sustainability. "Equally noteworthy is the inclusion of Asia's largest elevated wildlife corridor, which ensures the protection of natural habitats," he said, describing it as a balanced and forward-looking approach to development and environmental stewardship.
Political Support and Additional Benefits
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva welcomed the inauguration, calling the expressway a "historic and visionary step" towards development. He noted that infrastructure growth under Prime Minister Modi's leadership is "creating new history every day."
Sachdeva revealed that projects worth around Rs 65,000 crore are underway in Delhi, with Rs 33,000 crore completed and Rs 32,000 crore in progress. He added that peripheral expressways have reduced traffic pressure on the capital, with approximately 73,000 vehicles bypassing Delhi daily.
Highlighting the environmental component, Sachdeva mentioned that nearly one million metric tonnes of waste from the Ghazipur landfill had been utilized in the project, calling it a prime example of the 'waste to wealth' approach. This innovative use of materials underscores the project's alignment with sustainable development goals.
The inauguration of the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway marks a significant advancement in India's infrastructure landscape, promising enhanced mobility, economic prosperity, and environmental responsibility for the region.
