Delhi's Lakhpati Beti Yojna Replaces Ladli Scheme for Girls

Delhi Government Unveils Lakhpati Beti Yojna to Boost Girls' Education and Financial Security

In a significant move to enhance financial stability and educational continuity for girls from economically disadvantaged families, the Delhi government announced the launch of the 'Delhi Lakhpati Beti Yojna' on Tuesday. This new initiative replaces the 2008 Ladli Scheme, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasizing the government's dedication to ensuring that no girl child in Delhi is compelled to abandon her education due to monetary constraints.

Investment in Future Generations

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated, "This is an investment in the future of our girls and, therefore, in the future of our country." The scheme provides financial assistance of up to Rs 56,000, deposited in phased instalments tied to key educational milestones, starting from birth and extending through graduation or diploma-level studies. Over time, with accrued interest, the total amount is projected to exceed Rs 1 lakh upon maturity, offering a substantial financial cushion for beneficiaries.

Structured Disbursement and Direct Transfers

The funds will be transferred directly into the beneficiary's Aadhaar-linked bank account, ensuring transparency and efficiency. The assistance is structured in stages:

  • Rs 11,000 at birth
  • Rs 5,000 each upon admission to classes I, VI, IX, and XII
  • Rs 5,000 on passing class X
  • Rs 20,000 in phases upon completion of graduation or a recognised diploma course

Maturity amounts can be claimed after the beneficiary turns 18 and passes class XII, or upon completing graduation or a diploma and reaching 21 years of age.

Addressing Unclaimed Funds from Previous Scheme

Highlighting past issues, Gupta noted that more than 1.9 lakh maturity accounts under the previous Ladli Scheme remained unclaimed. In 2025, the government identified 30,000 such beneficiaries and disbursed Rs 90 crore. An additional 41,000 beneficiaries have been identified, with Rs 100 crore set to be released shortly. "In total, Rs 190 crore that rightfully belongs to these girls is being ensured and delivered to them," she affirmed.

Revised Eligibility and Expanded Coverage

The revamped scheme introduces modified eligibility criteria. It applies to girls born in Delhi, whose families have resided in the city for at least three years, with an annual income not exceeding Rs 1.2 lakh. Benefits are limited to two surviving girl children per family. Registration is permitted within one year of birth or at later stages, such as admission to classes I, VI, IX, XI, or upon entry into a recognised graduation or diploma programme.

Furthermore, the scheme broadens its scope to include girls pursuing graduation or professional diploma courses in government-recognised institutions across India. Provisions have been relaxed for girls residing in childcare under government protection to ensure wider inclusion.

Streamlined Online Process

The entire application and disbursal process will be conducted online, simplifying access and reducing bureaucratic hurdles for families. This digital approach aims to make the scheme more accessible and user-friendly, aligning with modern governance practices.

By launching the Lakhpati Beti Yojna, the Delhi government seeks to create a robust support system that not only addresses immediate financial needs but also fosters long-term educational and economic empowerment for girls, paving the way for a more equitable future.
