Digital Toll Mandate: FASTag and UPI Become Exclusive Payment Modes on National Highways

Starting this Saturday, user fee payments at National Highway toll plazas across India will be processed solely through digital methods, specifically FASTag or Unified Payments Interface (UPI), as confirmed by an official statement cited by PTI. This significant shift is designed to enhance efficiency and transparency in toll collection systems nationwide.

Exemptions Due to Model Code of Conduct

The transition to digital-only payments will not be implemented in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, West Bengal, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. This exemption is due to the Model Code of Conduct currently in effect for ongoing Assembly elections in these regions, ensuring compliance with electoral regulations.

Government Push for Digital Infrastructure

This move aligns with the government's long-standing initiative to strengthen digital infrastructure and promote cashless transactions across the country. FASTag, which has already gained widespread adoption, will now serve as the default mode of payment at toll plazas, reinforcing efforts to modernize India's transportation networks.

Impact on Commuters and Fallback Options

While regular commuters may find this change familiar, as many toll plazas have progressively reduced or discouraged cash payments in recent years, drivers without FASTag will still have a fallback option. However, this alternative will come at an additional cost, incentivizing users to adopt digital methods promptly.

Policy Goals: Reducing Congestion and Encouraging Compliance

The policy aims to discourage last-minute or non-compliant payments while encouraging users to install and maintain functional FASTag devices instead of relying on alternative payment methods. Long queues at toll plazas have been a persistent issue, with even brief delays per vehicle often leading to kilometers of congestion during peak hours.

Benefits of FASTag: Efficiency and Environmental Gains

Vehicles equipped with FASTag can pass through toll points without stopping, as the fee is automatically deducted, significantly reducing transaction times. This streamlined process not only alleviates traffic bottlenecks but also contributes to lower fuel consumption and fewer emissions, particularly on busy corridors, offering notable environmental benefits.

By mandating digital payments, the government seeks to create a smoother, more transparent toll collection ecosystem that supports both commuter convenience and broader sustainability goals.
