Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Inaugurates Maharashtra's First EKAL Hub in Nagpur
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari officially launched Maharashtra's pioneering Entertainment, Knowledge and Learning (EKAL) hub on Saturday at Khapri in Nagpur. This ambitious initiative is designed to deliver affordable entertainment and comprehensive digital learning facilities to rural communities throughout the state, marking a significant step in bridging the urban-rural divide.
A Multi-Purpose Facility for Rural Empowerment
The EKAL hub, developed through a collaboration between the Laxmanrao Mankar Trust and Cine Chourangi, functions as a versatile community center. Its primary feature is a mini theatre that will screen films at nominal, accessible rates for local residents. Beyond cinematic entertainment, the facility is equipped to serve as a digital classroom and a venue for seminars, training programs, workshops, and various educational activities aimed at benefiting people from surrounding villages.
Expansion Plans Across Maharashtra
Addressing the inauguration gathering, Gadkari revealed that the Khapri center represents just the initial phase of a much larger program. He announced plans to develop nearly 350 such EKAL hubs across rural Maharashtra in the coming years. The second phase of this expansion will specifically focus on districts including Washim and Gadchiroli, ensuring wider reach and impact.
Driving Socio-Economic Change in Rural Areas
Gadkari emphasized the project's potential to catalyze significant socio-economic transformation in rural regions. Quoting Swami Vivekananda, he stated, "No philosophy can be taught to an empty stomach," underscoring that development initiatives must directly address the economic realities and challenges faced by poor and socially disadvantaged sections of society.
In a related commitment, Gadkari disclosed that he has personally adopted Washim district with the goal of creating approximately 3,000 jobs there within the next two years. Several initiatives are already underway, including the establishment of a diagnostic center, a CNG pump, a super bazaar, and skill development programs designed to enhance employment opportunities for local youth.
Personal Insights and Long-Term Vision
Sharing a poignant personal anecdote from his early public life, Gadkari recalled being arrested during a protest shortly after the Emergency period. He spent four days in jail because he and his colleagues could not collectively arrange the ₹50 required for bail. This experience profoundly shaped his understanding of the critical importance of financial independence and economic empowerment for individuals and communities.
Reflecting on the EKAL initiative's philosophy, Gadkari admitted initial skepticism about the project's scope and limitations. However, he later became convinced that integrating education, culture, and entertainment under one roof could effectively uplift socially and economically backward communities.
He also highlighted the necessity of long-term vision for genuine social reform, remarking, "Every politician thinks about the next election, but a socio-economic reformer thinks for the next century." Gadkari described the EKAL hubs as small yet meaningful contributions toward improving the quality of life and overall happiness of people in rural India.
Project Details and Infrastructure
The EKAL Hub project is structured to establish centers that seamlessly combine entertainment, education, and community services. Each hub will include a cinema theatre featuring two screens, with each screen having a seating capacity of 125, ensuring ample space for community gatherings and educational sessions.
